Guides to Celestial Power
The Planetary Intelligences and a Beginner's Guide to Planetary Magick
Recently I was talking in one of my Facebook groups about the planets and how I tend to remember what spirit has which powers based on which planet they are associated with and I got several comments that basically told me this was a foreign concept to a lot of my customers. I remember when I was just starting I wrote off planetary magick as just a form of astrology and since I wasn’t interested in astrology I didn’t need to learn planetary magick. Obviously, I was terribly wrong about that, but I can see how others might be making the same mistake. So I thought it was time to give a little introduction to planetary magick and release some purely planetary attunements. I already have attunements with the archangels, plus the archangels are all known for much more than just their planetary associations, so I decided that the Planetary Intelligences would be the best way to introduce planetary magick to beginners.
The reason planetary magick is so important to understand is because throughout history, planetary magick has been one of the foundational pillars of esoteric practice. From the temples of ancient Babylon to the grimoires of the Renaissance, the idea that the celestial bodies influence both the natural world and human destiny has shaped countless mystical traditions. Understanding and working with planetary forces is not only a powerful tool for shaping one’s reality but also a key to aligning with the deeper rhythms of the cosmos.
At the heart of many magick systems lies the concept that the elements are the basic energies from which everything else is woven. The next step from the four (or five) elements are the seven classical planets. Each planet carries its own distinct energy—some expansive and benevolent, others restrictive or chaotic. These forces, when properly understood, can be harnessed for everything from wisdom and success to protection and transformation. They form the seven heavens, often referred to as the planetary spheres, that surround the earth. These planetary spheres are also known as sephiroth in Kabbalah and are the basic building blocks of the universe. Each are filled with a variety of spirits and energies.
And while planetary spirits are often seen as raw, untamed manifestations of a planet’s power, Planetary Intelligences serve as the guiding hands, refining these energies into their most beneficial expressions.
The Days and Planetary Magick
Each of the seven classical planets—Saturn, Jupiter, Mars, the Sun, Venus, Mercury, and the Moon—governs specific areas of life and influences everything from personal temperament to magical timing. One of the simplest and most effective ways to engage with planetary magick is by aligning your work with the days of the week. Each day is ruled by a particular planet, which imbues it with a unique energetic quality:
Sunday (Sun) – Illumination, vitality, success, authority, healing, wellbeing
Monday (Moon) – Intuition, emotions, dreams, psychic work
Tuesday (Mars) – Strength, courage, conflict, determination
Wednesday (Mercury) – Communication, intellect, travel, commerce, magick, learning
Thursday (Jupiter) – Expansion, prosperity, wisdom, influence
Friday (Venus) – Love, beauty, pleasure, harmony
Saturday (Saturn) – Discipline, structure, protection, patience, boundaries
Working on a planet’s designated day strengthens magical operations, but isn’t necessary for planetary magick to work. I know many people say otherwise, but in my experience working with a planetary spirit on it’s day will make a working more effective, but again, it’s not a necessity. I actually believe that when a writer gives a specific timing to a spirit it is more about them telling you what powers a spirit has rather than telling you when you have to work with them.
There is an even more precise system exists—the planetary hours—which divides each day into segments where different planets exert influence. This system allows a magician to mix the traits of two planets for a more refined approach. For example, if you wanted to make a healing ritual more aggressive you might do it during the hour of Mars on Sunday. However, for beginners, simply working with planetary days is an effective starting point.
Heinrich Cornelius Agrippa and the Planetary Hierarchies
Much of what we know about planetary magick in the Western tradition comes from Heinrich Cornelius Agrippa, a 16th-century occultist whose work Three Books of Occult Philosophy remains one of the most influential texts in esotericism. Agrippa systematized planetary correspondences, drawing from classical sources and medieval traditions to create a structured approach to celestial magic.
One of his most significant contributions was mapping out the hierarchy of planetary beings—three types of entities that govern each planet’s forces:
Archangels – Divine overseers, embodying the planet’s highest spiritual essence.
Intelligences – Benevolent guiding forces that refine and direct the planet’s beneficial energies.
Spirits – Raw, often chaotic forces of planetary energy, neither inherently good nor evil, but powerful and unpredictable.
While archangels represent the purest divine aspect of a planet, and spirits embody its raw, untamed power, the intelligences act as bridges—helping practitioners engage with planetary forces in a balanced and constructive way. They are the teachers and harmonizers of planetary magick, ensuring that celestial influences manifest in ways that are beneficial rather than overwhelming.
Now, let’s explore each of the planetary intelligences and their functions.
The Seven Planetary Intelligences
1. Saturn – Agiel
Saturn is the planet of discipline, restriction, and wisdom, often associated with both hardship and deep understanding. Agiel, Saturn’s intelligence, governs the beneficial aspects of its power, helping practitioners gain patience, endurance, and mastery over time and limitations. Working with Agiel can aid in long-term planning, breaking destructive habits, and developing resilience in the face of adversity.
2. Jupiter – Jophiel
Jupiter is the planet of expansion, prosperity, wisdom, and justice. Jophiel, its intelligence, refines these qualities, ensuring that expansion happens in a way that is sustainable and beneficial. Jophiel brings wisdom to wealth, temperance to ambition, and generosity to power. Working with this intelligence can enhance opportunities, increase luck, and bring insight into matters of success and leadership.
3. Mars – Graphiel
Mars rules over war, conflict, strength, and determination—energies that can be both empowering and destructive. Graphiel tempers these forces, ensuring that courage does not turn into recklessness and strength does not become tyranny. This intelligence helps practitioners channel aggression into constructive action, develop confidence, and stand firm in the face of challenges.
4. Sun – Nakhiel
The Sun is the source of life, illumination, authority, and vitality. Nakhiel refines the Sun’s energies, ensuring that personal power manifests as leadership rather than arrogance, and success is pursued with integrity. This intelligence aids in self-discovery, charisma, personal growth, and the attainment of true enlightenment. Those seeking recognition, clarity, or the strength to walk their unique path can benefit from working with Nakhiel.
5. Venus – Hagiel
Venus governs love, beauty, pleasure, and harmony. Hagiel ensures these qualities manifest in healthy, balanced ways. This intelligence refines passion into devotion, attraction into deep connection, and indulgence into appreciation. Working with Hagiel can aid in relationships, artistic pursuits, self-love, and emotional healing.
6. Mercury – Tiriel
Mercury rules communication, intellect, travel, and commerce—forces that can be chaotic when unchecked. Tiriel governs Mercury’s higher aspects, guiding the flow of information and sharpening the mind. This intelligence aids in learning, writing, speaking, business success, and mental clarity. Tiriel is particularly helpful for students, writers, and those seeking to improve their ability to express complex ideas.
7. Moon – Malkah be-Tarshishim ve-ad Ruachoth Shechalim
The Moon governs intuition, emotions, dreams, and the subconscious. Malcha refines these energies, ensuring that intuition does not turn into illusion and emotional depth does not lead to instability. This intelligence aids in psychic development, dream work, emotional balance, and spiritual attunement. Those seeking to deepen their connection to their inner world or explore mystical experiences can benefit greatly from working with Malcha.
Benefits of Working with Planetary Intelligences
Engaging with planetary intelligences requires respect, patience, and a willingness to learn. Unlike planetary spirits, which can be unpredictable, intelligences respond well to structured, intentional work. Here are some simple ways to begin working with them:
Invoke on Their Planetary Day – Calling upon an intelligence on its corresponding day strengthens your connection to it.
Use Symbols and Correspondences – Sacred names, sigils, incense, and colors aligned with each planet can enhance your practice.
Meditate and Reflect – Simply contemplating an intelligence’s influence in your life can bring insights and guidance.
Free You From Planetary Influence - In many systems the planets were seen as forces of destiny that determined our fate. Working with the intelligences can free us from thier control. Another way to put this is that these beings can help if you have any negative issues with a planet in your natal chart or if there is a retrograde or other problem. They can give you relief and illuminate pathways to refine your efforts.
In the 151 Current, working with the Planetary Intelligences is less about commanding external forces and more about attuning oneself to their refined currents, allowing their wisdom to shape and elevate one’s consciousness. These intelligences serve as initiatory gateways, each offering a distinct mode of perception and transformation. By aligning with them, the practitioner absorbs their qualities—discipline through Agiel, expansive insight through Jophiel, strategic strength through Graphiel, radiant self-sovereignty through Nakhiel, harmonious presence through Hagiel, fluid intellect through Tiriel, and deep inner knowing through Malcha. This is not about invoking them to act on your behalf, but rather harmonizing your inner structure with the celestial patterns they represent. Through contemplation, ritual alignment, and lived embodiment, these attunements refine the practitioner, drawing them into deeper resonance with the greater planetary dance and, ultimately, with the vast intelligence of the cosmos itself.
However, attuning to the Planetary Intelligences through the 151 Current is not just a mystical exercise—it is a direct means of shaping reality through resonance rather than force. When a practitioner fully aligns with an intelligence, their thoughts, actions, and energy fields begin to subtly synchronize with that planetary current, allowing manifestation to flow more naturally and effortlessly. Need structured discipline to complete a long-term goal? Attuning to Agiel shifts your internal rhythm, making perseverance second nature. Seeking recognition and influence? Nakhiel refines your personal radiance, making you effortlessly magnetic. Instead of wrestling with external forces, this approach embodies planetary power, making success, wisdom, love, or protection an organic extension of your being. Through ritual, meditation, and lived integration, planetary magick ceases to be about asking—it becomes about becoming.

Final Thoughts
Planetary intelligences are the refined essence of planetary forces, guiding seekers toward wisdom, balance, and mastery. While planetary magick can be practiced in many ways, working with these intelligences offers a structured and enlightening path—one that does not just harness celestial power, but aligns with its highest expressions.
For those willing to engage with them, planetary intelligences offer more than just magical aid—they offer a means of harmonizing with the greater cosmic order, ensuring that the forces we invoke work with us rather than against us. Working with the Planetary Intelligences in the 151 Current is a journey of alignment, refinement, and embodiment—one that shifts magick from something you do to something you are.
As you explore these celestial currents, consider: Which planetary forces already shape your life? Where do you feel harmony, and where do you experience resistance? If you could attune more deeply to one intelligence, which would it be, and how might that shift your path? Magick, at its core, is about relationship—with forces greater than yourself, with the world around you, and with your own evolving nature. The Intelligences stand ready to guide and illuminate, but the real question is: Are you ready to listen?
