Interesting thoughts. Now, I'm not US resident and would not like to be frankly, but I don't trust your government either. As for aliens, angels, demons, gods... I agree. You look at some benign TV shows or films like Stargate, Men in Black, Lucifer... and it makes you think. Don't think we should develop paranoia, while some are medical conditions, that doesn't mean they don't really see something. But, yes, definitions are always man made, one person usually, and if that one is biased or narrow minded, not to mention intellectually incapable of critical thinking, we should think for ourselves. As a kid and much younger gal, I read loads of SF, fantasy but also philosophy books that had me thinking. And as a scientist (biology, but I discuss other things with colleagues to check if they have opinion in their field) I have developed some of my theories, and they sound plausible to me. Whether it may be explained, proven or calculated, it's not my job. Not saying I'm right, but ... anything is probable I guess, as they say that science is when they explain something people considered magic before. As I love both magic and science, it's all Nature to me and I enjoy it. So I'm Gnostic atheist or call me Luciferian Witch if you will. I don't care, don't believe, like things that make sense to me and trust my judgement but I'm also willing to change my mind if someone has better explanation.

I think one has to be very wary of accepting an America-centric view of any of this. Here in the UK, the idea of government being run by evangelical Christians is so far from the reality that it would be laughable. The samw goes for France and Germany.
